Hey Carly--great question! I do not personally know of anyone using Google Maps as a way of plotting ancestral migration, and I don't use it myself--but why not? It should work just fine. I'll ask around...

I personally like "Family Atlas" by Roots Magic but it costs about $30 plus shipping and Google Maps is free.

The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library is collaborating with the Foundation for Online Genealogy in producing a few space on the web called WeRelate.org for genealogists to post data and supporting documents--including pictures. On any family page, there is an option along the top menu bar called "Pedi-Map." That option will take all the location data one has entered and map it--world wide. Pretty cool. I have a link to an example--the William Dugger family.

Hi Curt! Question for you - Do you know of any genealogists posting to Google Maps? My brother is super into researching the Wiggins family, and I thought I might be able to take one of our ancestors, map him in Ireland, then map his descendants as well through Canada and into Michigan. We'd get a geographical picture of our family history. But as a novice, I don't know if that would be a valuable way to preserve what my brother has discovered.

You should get yours done. I'm thinking of having mine done through the National Geographic's project. As an aside, we're having a Genetic Genealogy Program at the library in November--details forthcoming.

Yes, a very interesting segment. Glad that they pointed out which DNA was being tracked and what the real percentage of ancestry was involved. Wonder what would happen if I'd get mine done

So wonderful to see emphasis on both tombstones AND family stories on your weblog right before the library's celebration of Mexico's Day of the Dead-- actually a time to celebrate the LIVES of those who have passed away.

Family stories are both fun and crucial to share. Thanks, Curt!
